Ms. Laila M. Shishineh joined UMBC in 2010 working with First Year Experience (FYE) Programs in the Office of Undergraduate Education (OUE). In her current role as Assistant Director, she oversees and works with many programs intended to help first year students during their transition to campus. These programs include the Collegiate Success Institute (CSI) Summer Bridge Program, the Discovery Scholars Living-Learning Community, and initiatives related to several First Year Experience courses including the Introduction to an Honors University (IHU) Seminars and the Transfer Student Seminars (TRS). Beyond her work with OUE, Laila is very active in shared governance on campus, playing an integral role in the Professional Staff Senate as a representative on the Council of University System Staff (CUSS).
Ms. Shishineh came to UMBC from the University of Maryland, College Park. During her time at UMCP, she received her B.A. in Criminal Justice and Criminology as well as her M.A. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies with a focus on Higher Education. Laila is a part-time student in a doctoral program and hopes to earn her EdD in Educational Leadership within the next year or two. She plans to focus her doctoral dissertation on understanding the transitional issues faced by first year students and she will use her research to guide the work that she does at UMBC to best help first year students find success.
